A bit of History

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed over 100 years ago by Joseph Pilates, a German inventor who relocated to England in 1912 as the war broke out.

He was interned at a hospital in the Isle of Man where he invented the beginnings of the Cadillac and chair equipment with pullies and springs to rehabilitate bed bound patients to strengthen their muscles. He called his method Contrology, the complete co-ordination of mind body and spirit.

Dancers were the first to discover the benefits in the 1940’s and the method continued to evolve and develop. The exercises in the classical repertoire have been adapted over the years to suit and allow all ages and abilities to enjoy Pilates safely and achieve its full benefit.

Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.” Who doesn’t want that? - Joseph Pilates
